UNCLE JOHNS BAND - JESTER
- THE JESTER ADORNED THE GRATEFUL DEAD SONG BOOK COVER PUBLISHED IN 1972. THE MYTHIC CHARACTER OF THE COURT JESTER WAS TRANSFORMED BY STANLEY MOUSE AND ALTON KELLEY IN IMMORTAL DEAD LORE. THE ILLUSTRATION OF UNCLE JOHN'S BAND ACCOMPANIED THE LYRICS IN THE SONG BOOK. IT'S ALSO A LITTLE KNOWN PSEUDONYM FOR THE BAND.
WORKINGMAN'S DEAD -
STANLEY MOUSE DRESSED THE BAND IN HEAVY WORKMAN'S CLOTHES ON A SCORCHING DAY THAT REACHED 104 DEGREES. HE POSED THE BAND IN FRONT OF BARNEY'S BEANERY ACROSS FROM THE MEAT RENDERING PLANT IN SAN FRANCISCO. THEIR RELATIVE DISCOMFORT LENT AN EDGE TO THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE PHOTO. THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED IN 1970. THE BACK COVER INCLUDED SIX AIR BRUSHED PORTRAITS OF THE BAND.
TERRAPIN STATION -
STANLEY MOUSE AND ALTON KELLEY DESIGNED TERRAPIN STATION IN 1976. THE TURTLES WERE INSPIRED BY GERMAN ARTIST HEINRICH KLEY AND THE STATION WAS A REPLICA MODEL OF A RAILROAD STATION. KELLEY'S CONCEPTION OF THE CYCLOPS WAS RENDERED WITH SOUTHWESTERN FEEL BY MOUSE AND KELLEY.
DEAD DAMILY ALBUM -
STANLEY MOUSE PAINTED THE ROSE PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE COVER OF JERILYN LEE BRANDELIUS' TRIBUTE TO DEAD CULTURE, ""GRATEFUL DEAD FAMILY ALBUM". THE DESIGN IS AN HOMAGE TO ALPHONSE MUCHA, ONE OF MOUSE'S LONG TIME INSPIRATIONS. THE WILD WEST THEME OF THE FRONTISPIECE WAS INSPIRED BY AN ANTIQUE PHOTO OF A SMALL TOWN PREACHER...WHOSE CONSTITUENCY WAS GRATEFUL TO SEE HIM DEAD AND GONE.
ICE CREAM KID / RAINBOW FOOT -
INSPIRED BY CARTOON FODDER, MOUSE AND KELLEY CREATED THE IMAGE FOR THE GRATEFUL DEAD'S 1972 EUROPEAN TOUR. THE ENIGMATIC DESIGN IS WIDELY RECOGNIZED BUT NOT COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD. RAINBOW FOOT IS MOUSE AND KELLEY'S TRIBUTE TO CRUMB'S "KEEP ON TRUCKIN,' SET TO A HEAVEN AND EARTH MILIEU.
