The Republic of Ghana has launched a fantastic ultra high relief shaped coin series dedicated to the Gods of Norse mythology. This release is a celebration of Thor, the famed hammer wielding god, who is associated with lightning, thunder, storms, sacred groves and trees, strength, and the guardianship of mankind. Thor is one of the many sons of Odin, and is appointed with iconic weaponry which includes the belt Megingjoro and the iron gloves Jarngreipr, in addition to the hammer Mjolnir.
This 2022 Norse Gods series coin is struck from copper-nickel.
The coin is minted in the shape of Thor, with an approximate diameter of 45 mm.
The coin features a stunning silver plated antiqued finish.
The coin is considered to be legal tender for two cedis in the Republic of Ghana.
Mintage is limited to only 2,500 pieces.
Astoundingly Detailed Norse God Portrait
Obverse: The right facing effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created in 1998 by acclaimed British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley is located on the obverse. The effigy is immediately surrounded by the inscriptions "REPUBLIC OF GHANA, "ELIZABETH II," "2 CEDIS" and "2022," along with the coat of arms of Ghana. The remaining field is adorned with a pattern reminiscent of Celtic runes, which includes the name "THOR," flanked by a pair of lightning bolts.
Reverse: The Norse God Thor is portrayed on the reverse wearing a heavily armored breastplate, a fur trimmed cape and a helmet adorned with magnificently detailed antlers. A simplified symbol representing Thor's hammer Mjolnir appears above, while ornately carved renditions of the hammer are located above each of his shoulders.
